"Feeding our enemies"
At the time of the second world war, the Imperial Army of Japan invaded the small Micronesian island of Kosrae in the South Pacific. The people of Kosrae were treated badly. The men, women, and children were forced to work as slaves, which meant they had to do hard work without being paid or thanked.
However the king, a Christian by the name of John Sigrah, urged the people to resist. “We are not slaves,” he said. “We must not take orders from others.” This was very frustrating for the invaders. When the people would not work for them anymore, the king was tortured, to try to get him to change his mind. But he would not. The people would not work for their enemies. The king was treated very badly, but he would not give in. Neither would the Kosraen people.
When the war was over the invaders left. Other people came to help rebuild the small island. They were surprised to hear the king say that he had found a way pay back the people who hurt him. “Really?” they asked. “But we thought you were a kind, caring, Christian man. How did you pay them back?”
“When the soldiers got hungry,” the king replied, “I gave them food.”
