We began with a check-in question about where you see Arkona United in 3 years' time. A constant theme emerged: that we as a group of people, a community of faith, would still be together somehow, somewhere. It was generally agreed that the building itself was secondary to keeping those within spiritually connected with each other. Many hoped for a vital and sustainable children's ministry. Also expressed was the hope that whatever changes we make, we do because we choose to, not because we're forced to.
There was some disappointing financial news: the current operating loan of $25,000 was deemed too high by the bank and should only be $10,000. Certainly this puts increased pressure on our situation as each month sees expenses outweigh income by $2000. For information, last year's debt load peaked in June/July at $16,000.
It was requested by the auditor that all groups adjust their financial year to end December 31 and include outstanding deposits, as well as cheques, to consistency and accuracy.
The current relationship with Ravenswood United and the sharing of resources in a 70%-30% ratio was questioned and further investigation and discussion will have to occur.
Some of the other business that was transacted:
* We noted with regret the "disbanding" of the Quilters group and offered our thanks for the many years of work and support to the church
* We pledged $1500 to the The Mission and Service from the congregation, with an additional $500 from the UCW
* Once our current obligation to our foster child in the Philippines concluded, we would re-evaluate our situation and not take on another child for the time being
* It was agreed to sell the old organ to our organist/musician, Pedro Quintana, for $300.
* Anniversary service on September 24th would feature the present minister, Kenji Marui as "guest" speaker and special musical guest
I have to say that it was an honest expression of doubt and uncertainty in the future, but we did leave the meeting with a spark of hope and energy. And if I've mis-remembered anything, please add them as comments or contact me and I'll make the necessary corrections.
