Our household has been a little under the weather lately, and I've been a little negligent with the postings. Bear with me, better health is on the way!
Luke's account of the annunciation to Mary is a comforting and profound story that pretty much speaks for itself. A young woman, girl, is singled out to bring God's own presence into the world.
And it seemed that everything had to be in place for this birth to take place. For Mary to be willing to go along with this grand adventure, for Joseph (being of the lineage of King David) to believe her, for Elizabeth and Zechariah to also be open to their personal miracle of surprising birth ... so many things had to go just right in preparation for Christ's birth. It put me in mind of the new TV show Prison Break where someone gets himself put in jail to help break his brother out of Death Row. His elaborate planning required a number different people to contribute in their own (often unwitting) way.
We wondered about the strength of the relationship between Mary and Elizabeth because the age difference was a hurdle. One pre-pubescent and the other post-menopausal. Certainly they shared common bonds beyond the ones that formed after their visits from the angel Gabriel.
This text put me in mind of a song by young Canadian songstress Sarah Slean called, fittingly, "Mary":
Mary
Go ahead and have your little baby
Mary
Toughest of the tough but still a lady
